Living Witnesses to History

ABOUT THE ADD-ONS
History in the Room
Each ABHE Guest Add-On brings a living primary source into your experience — someone who did not read about this history in a book, but who lived it, survived it, or was shaped by it in ways no archive can fully capture.
These appearances are available as additions to any ABHE experience and are subject to individual availability. Each guest is booked separately as part of your experience package, with advance notice required. Their presence transforms an already exceptional experience into something your guests will describe for years.
Mr. Michael Jones
The Stratford Four
On February 2, 1959, at age twelve, Michael walked into Stratford Junior High and desegregated public schools in Virginia. Your clients hear the story from the man who lived it.

Mr. William Vollin
One of the Last Living Queen City Residents & Langston School Teacher
One of the last known residents from the Queen City neighborhood. This community of 903 residents was destroyed by the U.S. government to build feeder roads for the Pentagon. Mr. Vollin also shares his experience at the historic segregated Black school, John M. Langston School in Hall’s Hill. He shares what education looked like in a segregated community — and what was gained and lost when integration came.

Ms. Marguarite Reed Gooden
Descendant of Fire Station 8
Daughter of Captain Hartman Reed, who staffed the first all-Black fire station below the Mason-Dixon line. She knows the origin and the timeline. Marguarite and Wilma’s stories bring the preservation fight in 2016 to life.
